The world feels upside down right now, and the only words I can find aren’t really words. They are the comforting nod of a midwife when a mama shares her experience. They are the knowing “mmmm” of a friend who listens well. They are the recognition that, wow, things really are this way. They are also hope that maybe things won’t always be this way.
Now go do the work of anti-racism and upending unjust systems.
I’ll leave you with this short blessing I wrote last year for anyone who finds themselves as a pilgrim on a journey.
A Blessing as you Camino
May you not wish away today in hopes of a perfect tomorrow.
May you believe that everyone is doing the best they can with what they have been given.
May you believe people can do better when they know better.
May you assume the best in everyone who offends you.
May you always believe in the power of your own voice.
May you always remember the importance of listening to the voice of others.
May you also listen to the quietest voice inside you, the one not filled with rage, but filled with, dripping with, love.
May you not shy away from the rage of others.
It might teach you something.
It might reveal something in you.
May your steps take you exactly where you need to go, even if they are unexpected.
May your journey be shared with people who love you, food that fills you, and wine that delights you.
May you be granted many smiles from babies and kisses from puppies.
When you feel joy, may you be fully present in it.
May you have people who care enough to ask how you are really doing.
May you be courageous enough to tell them.
May you always use your strength to protect the weak and advocate for justice.
May the tide of justice roll in front of you and around you.
May peace ever go before you and behind you and to your sides and above your head and beneath you.
May you have ice cream and a breeze in the window on hot days and books by fireside curled under heavy blankets on cold days.
May you notice your bias and repent when it bubbles up against another human.
May you listen before you decide to speak, and think before you formulate your words.
May you read before you think.
May you be a beacon of kindness and a pillar of hope wherever your feet are stationed.
Ultreia, pilgrim. Buen camino. Onward.
This is so beautiful, Kelly. My favorite line from the blessing: “may you not wish away today in hopes of a perfect tomorrow”. I need to hear and receive and live that blessing.
